Site Glossary

A glossary is being provided to help you familiarize yourself with some of the terms that will be used in the explanations of some services and to the left you'll find examples of documents that may be needed to complete your vehicle service.

Passenger Vehicle: A standard passenger vehicle requires an annual registration fee to be paid to the county tax assessors office. Amounts paid depend solely on the model year that the car was made. This is also know as a windshield sticker, license plate sticker or registration renewal.

Truck: The annual licensing fee for the registration of a truck or truck-tractor that is not to be used in combination with a semi-trailer and is not required to be registered as a Combination or a Motor bus.

Motor Bus: The annual registration fee for a motor bus is determined by the net carrying capacity of the vehicle to be used. To determine the carrying capacity simply multiply the vehicles seating capacity by 150 lbs. The seating capacity is determined by the manufacturer's rated seating capacity exclusive of the driver. The seating capacity of any such vehicle not rated by the manufacturer shall be determined by allowing 16 inches for each passenger that such vehicle will seat, exclusive of the driver.

Combination: The annual fee for the registration of a truck-tractor or truck with a manufacturer's rated carrying capacity in excess of 1 Ton (2000 lbs.) used or to be used in combination with a semi-trailer having a manufacturer's rated carrying capacity of 3 Tons (6000 lbs.) or more. The vehicle must be registered as a combination with its proper gross weight class of up to 80,000 lbs. and no less than the net weight of the vehicle and trailer along with the rated carrying capacities of both. The county tax assessor issues this plate and they impose and collect all taxes and fees. A diesel or non-diesel specification is also needed to calculate the cost of this kind of registration.

Apportion: This tag is also known as I. R. P.  or International Registration Plan. This is a program for licensing commercial vehicles (Trucks, Truck-tractors, Trailers, and Buses) engaged in interstate operation among member jurisdictions (States and Provinces in North America) and is used for the transportation of persons, property, or vehicles in return for compensation. The Texas Department of Transportation issues the plate and they impose all taxes and fees according to several factors such as states required for work, home county, vehicle weight and value , and combined gross weight to be carried. After title application and intent to register as apportion vehicle notice has been given to the county tax office that is going to process the title for the vehicle, it is the owners full responsibility to insure that a separate application is made with the Apportion division of the Texas Dept. of Transportation or a perspective office in their home state. They will be the department issuing the plate to you for your vehicle and they will also hold periodic audits on your account for mileage log books that are a requirement of you while operating under this registration plan. Log books are to consist of vehicle origination and destination, miles traveled and through what route or states, and must include all trips. Should you obtain an out of state apportion registration it will also be your responsibility to turn over a copy of your apportion cab card, once issued, to the county in which your vehicle was initially titled in. Doing so will ensure the completion or your titling process for that particular vehicle.

Token: This registration class is for semi trailers that are pulled or to be pulled by a truck or truck tractor with the combination or apportion registration only. The trailer must have a manufacturer's carrying capacity of 3 tons (6000 lbs.) and the vehicle pulling it must have a manufacturer's carrying capacity of at least 1 ton (2000 lbs.). The registration and plate is issued through the county tax assessors office and all fees and taxes are imposed and collected by them. You can claim exemption from paying sales taxes on the purchase of a trailer with this particular registration, but the vehicle pulling must be registered as an apportion class vehicle.

Trailer: any trailer wishing to be used on the highway for the purpose of hauling or moving contents. This class is a general class and types can range from shop made trailers to a standard semi-trailer. The county tax assessor issues plates and imposes and collects taxes on this type of registration.

Farm Truck and Farm Trailer: The annual fees for these vehicle are based on regular truck and trailer class fees but are allowed a 50% reduction as provided by law. The requirements are the same, with the only stipulation being that the vehicle is to be used in the daily duties of operating a farm and for that purpose only.

Diesel Fees: An additional 11% must be added to registration fees on all diesel powered vehicles with a manufacturer's rated carrying capacity of 2 tons (4000 lbs.) or more.

Gross Weight: The actual weight of the vehicle fully equipped with body and other equipment, as certified by an official public scale location, plus its net carrying capacity.

Net Carrying Capacity: the weight of the heaviest net load to be carried on the vehicle being registered; provided that said net load shall in no case exceed the manufacturer's set limitations
